Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Two Japanese-trained raiders head the Doncaster Mile 2015 nominations taken by Racing NSW today along with those for the seven other Group 1 The Championship races this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
A total of 139 gallopers make up the early entries for this year’s $3 million Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m), the handicap classic to run on Saturday April 4 along with the TJ Smith Stakes, Australian Derby and the Inglis’ Produce Stakes.
Leading the all-in futures Doncaster Mile odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at an early quote of around $7 is one of the two Japanese milers set to head down under for the race, World Ace.
The Yasutoshi Ikee-trained Deep Impact stallion was last seen in the winners’ stall back in April last year but ran a brave fourth last start behind Able Friend in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin in mid-December.
He looks the benchmark of the visitors and the Australian bookmakers are taking no chances.
The other horse from Japan featuring in this year’s Doncaster Mile nominations is then Real Impact.
Noriyuki Hori’s stallion is a seven-year-old son of the same sire as World Ace, Deep Impact, and pays around $10 to win the Doncaster Mile following a 1400m victory in the Group 2 Hashin Cup on Firm ground back home in late December.
The two other horses high up the Doncaster Mile betting markets currently are then young Shooting To Win ($8) and First Seal ($9).
One of four for father-and-son training team Peter & Paul Snowden, Northern Meteor colt Shooting To Win is only three-years-old but is ready to tackle the big autumn stars.
He was last seen winning the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11 and trialled well at Randwick on February 2 with a 1000m win ahead of his return in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) first-up Rosehill on February 21.
First Seal is another three-year-old shooting for Doncaster glory, the John Thompson-trained Fastnet Rock filly having won three of her six career starts to date.
Her biggest achievement was over the same track and distance as the Doncaster when winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on October 4.
She backed up from that back at the track over 2000m in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes and was a brave second to Gai Waterhouse’s 2015 Australian Derby hope Hampton Court.
Three-year-olds have an ace recent record in the Doncaster Mile with four saluting in the past decade including three on the trot with Racing To Win (2006), Haradasun (2007) and Triple Honour (2008).
The last three-year-old was Chris Waller’s subsequent 2014 champ Sacred Falls for his first in 2013, the 30th to win in the race’s history with the first being Wanderer (1873).
Along with dual champ Sacred Falls who has gone back-to-back for Waller in the past two years, Sydney’s premier trainer has also won the Doncaster with Rangirangdoo (2010) and Triple Honour (2008) in the past seven years.
This year Waller has an imposing 25 Doncaster Mile entries led by Epsom Handicap winner He’s Your Man who was last seen running second to Happy Trails in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Derby Day.
Waller’s other notable Doncaster hopes in 2015 are former ATC Oaks winner and perennial runner-up Royal Descent, dual defending champ Sacred Falls back again shooting for a hat-trick never before achieved, Boban who ran ninth first-up in the Expressway Stakes, and his Expressway Stakes winning stablemate Weary.
Royal Descent is the best fancied mare.
Mares have won two of the past four Doncaster Miles with Sacred Choice (2011) and the Gai Waterhouse-trained More Joyous (2012) who became the 32nd female winner of the classic three years back.
The other top three-year-olds in the mix for 2015 include the John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt Sweynesse and the Bart & James Cummings-trained Golden Rose champ Hallowed Crown.
Other notable hopes include Paul Beshara’s Mackinnon Stakes winner Happy Trails and Peter Moody’s Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva Stakes double winner Dissident.
The most noteworthy omission meanwhile is Emirates Stakes winner Hucklebuck.
Late Doncaster Mile entries close on Friday February 20 before the weights are released the following Monday.
First acceptances for all eight Group 1 The Championship races then close on Monday March 9 before the 2015 Doncaster Mile final field and barriers are out on Tuesday March 31.
