Hobart Cup 2015 Tips & Selections

This afternoon the first Group 3 major off the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival’s Cups Double takes place at Hobart Racecourse with the 2015 Hobart Cup – betting tips for which are detailed below.

A dozen stayers remain in contention for the $225,000 Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) after Scott Brunton withdrew Perplexing leaving interstate hoop Dwayne Dunn without a run in today’s major.

Tony McEvoy’s improving Pelicano is the market mover and favourite in current Hobart Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au in from $4.40 to $4 with Matthew Neilson to ride the visitor from gate five on 58kg.

A host of other genuine hopes follow the firming Court Of Jewels six-year-old including the Michael Moroney-trained former 2400m winner Garud ($4.80), Brunton’s in-form Banca Mo ($5.50), the Bill Ryan-trained Genuine Lad ($6) out wide in gate 11 and Summer Cup winner Geegees Blackflash ($6.50) who runs in his fifth consecutive Hobart Cup.

So will the favourite salute for the punters or is there an upset Hobart Cup result on the cards?

1st

#7 Genuine Lad ($6)

Still a decent price for this ultra-consistent local who has finished in the money without a win in his past six starts. He has barrier 11 of 12 to overcome but jockey Anthony Darmanin is the right hoop to get the job done. Gets in on 54kg so drops back from the 58kg he had in the Summer Cup over 2200m here on January 25 when a nose off Geegees Blackflash. Gets a five kilo weight advantage for the rematch with his last start conqueror here so should be able to make up that nose margin even from the wide barrier in his first run over 2400m.

2nd

#3 Banca Mo ($5.50)

Champion local cult-like galloper jumps from barrier two for jockey David Pires who stays on after the two ran second to Iggimacool in the Tasmanian Stakes over the mile on December 31. Has won a 1400m Hobart trial since then but does go up notably in distance from 1600m to 2400m. Closest he’s run to that distance is 2350m, which he’s won over, so should be right as he shoots for his third win from five runs at the track. Missed a vital lead-up run but has residual fitness from the trial and has claims.

3rd

#1 Geegees Blackflash ($6.50)

Gun draw for John Luttrell’s eight-year-old veteran who carries the 59kg top weight for his 63rd career start. He deserves those kilos having run in this race the past four years including his 2012 win and a his second to Epingle 12 months ago with 60kg. He had 59kg on his back to win the Summer Cup narrowly on January 25, drops a kilo and shoots for another top run over the 2400m (7-2-2-3) on the back of imposing form.
