Nominations for all the Apollo Stakes Day races in Sydney at Randwick Racecourse this weekend are now out including those for the Triscay Stakes 2015 that have been extended.
After receiving 15 early entries for the mares-only $150,000 Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) for Saturday, Racing NSW will keep nominations open for the quality handicap clash until 11am (local) on Tuesday.
Of the current nominees the top rated is the Kris Lees-trained Lucia Valentina.
Last seen failing to run out the two miles of the Melbourne Cup, the multiple Group 1 winner is looking in top condition for an ace Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival return as she heads towards the lucrative $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 11.
The Triscay Stakes nomination however is only a precaution with connections confirming her first-up target as the $250,000 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at the same meeting where jockey Hugh Bowman will reunite with Savabeel four-year-old.
The next highest rated mares in the mix for the Triscay are the Les Bridge-trained Avoid Lightning and Cosmic Endeavour for Gai Waterhouse.
Super-consistent Blevic six-year-old Avoid Lightning has won three of her past four starts with the only loss since May last year being a close third when under half a length off the winner in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm.
That run on June 21 finished off her winter and she returned in the spring but had just the one run for a Group 3 win over 1200m here at Randwick.
She trialled well on February 2 at the track over 1000m when fourth to Ryker and has a solid first-up record of three wins from seven resuming runs leading into this.
Cosmic Endeavour meanwhile won the Tattersall’s Tiara in Brisbane during a killer autumn – winter campaign last year that saw her win the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in April as well as four on the trot from May – June.
She hasn’t run since the Tattersall’s Tiara but also runs well fresh with two from three first-up to date and has been flying in her lead-up trials.
She most recently beat Diamond Drille to win by two and a half lengths in a hit-out over 1200m at Randwick at the start of the month, form that bodes well leading into the Triscay.
Along with her impressive Group 1 winner, Waterhouse has also nominated for High Chaparral four-year-old Forever Loved.
Winner of the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in October she is out to atone for a failed run in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) last Victoria Derby Day when 16th of 16 runners finishing over eight lengths off the winner Bonaria.
Like her stablemate though she’s come up good in trials ahead of the autumn including a win over Big Memory from February 2 over the track and distance she resumes at on Saturday.
Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller meanwhile has four Triscay Stakes entries with last start Flemington winner Calming Influence, Kristy Lee in a class rise here, New Zealand import Telepathic and his headliner Champagne Cath.
Street Sense four-year-old Champagne Cath was last seen running a brave third when under a length off the winner Endless Shadow in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Quality Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast at the start of the month.
She’s back to her pet distance here and is a previous winner over 1200m at Randwick.
Other notable Triscay Stakes nominations include the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Hussonet mare Mahara who won the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, fifth in that race My Sabeel who is a 43-start veteran and Lees’ Group 2 winner Thump.
