2015 Sydney Cup Nominations Include Who Shot Thebarman

Chris Waller’s proven two miler Who Shot Thebarman is one of the headline nominations taken by Racing NSW for the Sydney Cup 2015 today.

Early entries for all eight Group 1 majors held over the opening two Saturday in April for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival’s The Championships closed this afternoon, including those for the $1.6 million Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) on April 11.

Futures Sydney Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au pre-nominations were co-led by Who Shot Thebarman and Signoff at a quote of $7.

Connections of the Darren Weir-trained Lexus Stakes winner Signoff, last seen running fourth to Protectionist in the Melbourne Cup on November 4, however opted not to nominate for the Authorzied gelding.

Signoff instead has a light autumn planned with the major aim being getting him ready for another shot at the world’s richest handicap, the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at the end of the year.

That leaves Waller’s New Zealand import Who Shot Thebarman to lead the futures Sydney Cup betting markets at a firming price after he was one of the 91 nominations for the classic handicap clash.

Who Shot Thebarman is a previous Group 1 winner over the Sydney Cup distance of 3200m having won the 2014 Auckland Cup back at Ellerslie last March.

He debuted down under after that run in last autumn’s Sydney Cup but put in only a moderate performance to finish nearly 13 lengths away ninth to Gai Waterhouse’s winner The Offer.

He has had a full preparation in Australian since however and showed massive improvement in ‘the race that stops a nation’ last time out when putting in a top staying effort to finish third behind German stayer Protectionist in the Melbourne Cup.

Waller has saddled up 10 Sydney Cup starters over the years for just the one winner, Stand To Gain (2011).

Who Shot Thebarman is one of 10 chances for him to add a second in 2015, his other more notable hope being his The Metropolitan winner over 2400m at Randwick last October Opinion.

The two horses that finished first and second respectively in the Melbourne Cup quinella ahead of third place Who Shot Thebarman meanwhile are also in the mix for the Sydney Cup this autumn with Protectionist and Red Cadeaux both nominated.

The Kris Lees-trained Monson stallion Protectionist was transferred to the Newcastle horseman’s care from that of his German trainer late last year and showed he was ready to return with a bang thanks to a winning barrier trial at Broadmeadow on February 2.

The Ed Dunlop-trained veteran Red Cadeaux made history when becoming a three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up behind the lightly-raced Protectionist last spring and is in line to become the first European visitor to Sydney in the autumn in history.

Also nominated for the lucrative $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) over less distance at the same meeting, Tony McEvoy has kept the Sydney Cup dream alive for his Duke Of Marmalade gelding Big Memory.

The Herbert Power Stakes champ was runner-up to Signoff in the Lexus Stakes last spring but missed a Melbourne Cup start, instead finishing third to Le Roi in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth over 2600m on November 8.

Adding another level of intrigue to the Sydney Cup in 2015 is the likely inclusion of John Moore’s Hong Kong champion Dominant who will stay on in Australia for an as-yet decided local trainer after the autumn.

A horse not suited to the truly firm tracks back in Hong Kong, seven-year-old Dominant earned his Sydney Cup assignment after a brave fourth by Flintshire in a hot formline race from December 14 at Sha Tin, the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m).

Other headline Sydney Cup nominations include Henry Dwyer’s Queensland Derby winner from last winter Sonntag and the Peter Moody-trained Sandown Classic winning import Au Revoir.

Some of the notable Sydney Cup omissions meanwhile include the David Payne-trained import Terrubi who is unraced in Australia, Irish mare Pale Mimosa, the Robert Hickmott-trained Almandin, Lucia Valentina who will likely run in the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes instead and Gai Waterhouse’s reigning Sydney Cup winner The Offer.

Late Sydney Cup entries close on February 20 with Sydney Cup weights following on Monday February 23.

First Acceptances are then open until March 9 before the final field is out on Tuesday April 7 along with the Sydney Cup barrier draw.
