Stuart Gandy’s nicely drawn filly Geegees Goldengirl has opened top of the Strutt Stakes 2015 odds to win her Hobart Cup Day assignment in Tasmanian this afternoon.
The Wordsmith filly is one of a dozen three-year-old fillies in the mix for this year’s $100,000 Listed PFD Food Services Strutt Stakes (2100m), the set weights clash due to jump as Hobart Race 7 at 3:55pm (local) today.
Drawn ideally in barrier two with apprentice jockey Sigrid Carr to ride, Geegees Goldengirl is looking to win for the first time since November following a string of close minor placings.
She pays $3.10 in the latest Strutt Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to break the succession of second and third place finishes, the most recent of which was a third when under half a length off Warrior Of Fire in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) on January 25.
Before that she was also tested in black type company for a second, three lengths off Admiral in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m).
It’s a relatively open Strutt Stakes betting market this summer with five other single figure hopes including Ryan’s Daughter ($6.) and Marocan Diva ($6.50) drawn in barriers four and six respectively.
The Troy Blacker-trained Holy Roman Emperor filly Ryan’s Daughter has won two of her four career starts to date dating back to November 26 during the spring.
She’s unraced at Hobart however with all four of her previous runs being at Tasmania’s other major track, Launceston, where she most recently won the Thousand Guineas over the mile on January 21.
Marocan Diva is then a Michael Walker mount for Victorian trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig.
The daughter of Flying Spur ran third last time out over 2060m in a Benchmark 64 at Cranbourne on January 23 so is tested over plenty of distance.
Her only win from 11 starts to date was over 1500m so she could be hitting her stride finally being stretched out to the 2100m today.
The next best in betting at $7 is then the in-form Savrajette who has run top three in his past four runs.
Bill Ryan’s local Savoire Vivre filly has barrier five today with Anthony Darmanin staying on after the duo ran third to Ryan’s Daughter in the Thousand Guineas last time out.
Rounding out the single figure Strutt Stakes hopes this summer are then Thousand Guineas runner-up Shayana ($8) in barrier three who won over the Hobart mile the start before and Tralee Chorus ($8) with similar lead-up.
The Patrick Payne-trained Melbourne raider won over 1400m at Warnambool in late December before a second over the Ballarat mile for the O’Reilly filly on January 18.
