Baster is fresh off a win in the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy aboard I Love It from Friday night and so is in-form for the ride on Written Tycoon colt Royalic first-up this afternoon.
The visiting Mornington-based galloper is prepared by Mark Riley and debuted at Flemington back on October 4.
He was outclassed however when 10th beating home just one runner in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial (1000m) during the spring.
Sent to the paddock to mature after that, the youngster enjoyed a winning 800m trial at Cranbourne on January 29 and is now on the firm to win his second career start when debuting in Tasmania today.
The Elwick Stakes odds are wide open this Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival with five of the other 10 hopefuls also at single figures to win including the second best fancied, Sky Of Stars ($4.20).
Top interstate hoop Dwayne Dunn is down for the carnival and rides Terence Evans’ undefeated New Approach colt Sky Of Stars.
The up-and-comer won on debut over 1000m here at Hobart on January 25 defeating Geegees Double Jo by one and a half lengths and now looks for back-to-back wins for his summer.
On the drift but still the next best fancied in the Elwick Stakes markets at $5.50 out from $4.60 is then Gee Gees Top Notch in barrier three for ace local jockey Anthony Darmanin.
Along with an ideal draw, the Wordsmith filly is the best fancied female and has the form to back it up with the John Luttrell-trained fancy having won two of her four starts to date.
She’s run second in her two other starts so far, with both her victories being at the Hobart track.
Last start on January 14 she ran second to the consistent Barry Campbell-trained Sharkbite gelding Siorca over 1100m at Launceston and with a month between runs should be fresh enough to improve and return to the winners’ stall.
The other young hopes under $10 are then Gee Gees Top Notch’s last star conqueror Siorca ($6) shooting for his third win on the trot and his third from as many starts over the distance, the unraced Gee Gees Jet ($6) out wide in gate nine and Shane Nichols’s I Am Invincible filly Band On The Run ($6.50).
