Jameka Could Feature in 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes

Ciaron Maher has big plans in the pipeline for Jameka if the progressive filly can impress in the RL 2YO Inglis Premier (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday.

Jameka is one of 14 two-year-old horses set to line up in the lucrative Inglis sales restricted race, offering prize money totaling $250,000. The filly will have to overcome a start from barrier 13, which is the second widest gate, but will have hoop Craig Williams in the saddle, who has acquired the ride on Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist for the autumn.

Despite her wide draw, Jameka has seen plenty of support in the RL 2YO Inglis Premier betting at Ladbrokes.com.au. The market mover has seen her price shorten from $4.60 into $4, which makes her second favourite behind Deja Blue ($3.80).

Maher came out on Friday morning and told Sky Racing that he would consider taking the filly to the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 28 if she can win tomorrow.

“This is the race we targeted for her. And if she happens to win, me might look at the Diamond,” Maher said.

“But I think she’s improved off her first run.”

Jameka debuted at Bendigo on December 21, finishing three-quarters of a length behind winner Parcel in the 900 metre race. The filly was then sent to the paddock for a few weeks before beginning preparations for the Inglis Premier.

Maher believes Jameka has only improved on her debut run and isn’t concerned about her wide draw.

“I think she’s a pretty progressive filly,” Maher said.

“She’s always shown me nice ability and she’s a big scopey horse.”

The Matthew Allen-trained Deja Blue is favourite to win the race after an impressive barrier trial victory at Cranbourne on January 29.
