Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Caulfield’s Robert Smerdon is looking forward to saddling-up two promising juveniles at Sandown-Hillside on Saturday including the unraced Andrioli for her debut run.
Smerdon’s top chance at the Melbourne weekend meet is his Merson Cooper Stakes winner Thurlow, the Sebring filly returning to racing in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m).
There the single-figure fancy will put her claims for a campaign targeting the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 28 on the line.
Smerdon’s other exciting two-year-old prospect on show, Andrioli runs in the fifth with a field of 14 lining up in the sales-restricted $250,000 RL 2YO Inglis Premier (1000m).
Nicholas Hall has the ride on the daughter of Stryker, a $65,000 buy from the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale last year, with the two to jump from barrier eight, Ladbrokes.com.au paying $16 for Andrioli to break her maiden status on debut.
The Inglis Premier odds are a wide open affair with a host of single-figure fancies including fellow debutant Deja Blue who is the $3.80 favourite.
Robbie Griffiths’ Denman filly comes off a winning trial at Cranbourne from January 29 and is a $21 chance for the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes at the end of the month.
Smerdon meanwhile has two fillies heading towards the Blue Diamond Stakes having accepted for Fontiton and Thurlow in the latest round of declarations for the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival classic.
Group 3 performed Thurlow is an $81 roughie and could be saved for an easier campaign heading towards something like the $150,000 Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on March 14 instead.
Undefeated Fontiton though is battling with the Mick Price-trained Secret Agenda for favouritism in the futures Blue Diamond Stakes odds, the duo paying $5 and $4.80 respectively.
Andrioli is not on the Blue Diamond Stakes path this autumn, but is still a good prospect coming along nicely according to Smerdon.
“We’re taking the opportunity to run in the Inglis race and just see how she goes,” he told Racing Victoria.
“She’s promising, but we haven’t got an accurate line on her yet, so we’ll just see how she progresses.”
