Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Tonight one of the feature Friday evening showdowns is the Tasmanian Derby 2015 at Hobart Racecourse, betting tips for the three-year-old staying showdown found below.
A final field of 10 three-year-olds faces off in this year’s $100,000 Listed Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m), betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for which are led by the Patrick Payne-trained Baja Moon ($3.60) from Victoria.
Hot on the High Chaparral filly’s heels in the Tasmanian Derby odds are then the best fancied local hope Shiralee ($3.70) whose trainer Gary White won the race with Ollie’s Gold two years back and Dandy Gent ($3.80) representing Stawell trainers Terry & Karina O’Sullivan.
The only other runner under double figures is then Valdez ($8) in barrier four coming off a fourth in the Hobart Guineas.
The Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) from January 25 is also the race Startum gelding Shiralee comes via, the up-and-comer having run a nose away second to Warrior Of Fire.
With so many live wire chances in the markets, below are the Races.com.au Tasmanian Derby betting tips so you can sort those to back and those to sack before placing your bets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
#2 Shiralee ($3.70)
The best of the local hopes, this White’s galloper can keep the trophy at home. Drawn well in gate three, top hoop Dean Yendall stays on and lead-up form is good. Comes off a close second when just a nose off the winner in the Hobart Guineas over 2100m at the track and trainer thinks the extra 100m won’t be an issue. He had a smooth run there and with the same passage into this race and a touch of luck will be hard to hold out.
#10 Baja Moon ($3.60)
Drawn one inside our top pick Shiralee this Victorian filly was competitive over 2040m at Moonee Valley three weeks back after a Sale win over the mile. Distance test here stretching out over further but she comes from a good stable and is a genuine shot at the title.
#4 Geegees Baritone ($13)
Plenty of picks to fill the minor placings have claims but the value on this Leon & Dean Wells-trained Wordsmith gelding is too good to go past. Won over 1400m at Launceston two back before a second at the same track over a mile. Not sure how he’ll go with the extra metres but is in top form and Hobart could be the trick.
