While this evening’s Hobart meeting is known as Tasmanian Derby Day, the feature race on the program looks to be the fillies and mares facing off in the Bow Mistress Trophy 2015 – betting tips for which are detailed below.
Due to jump as Race 7 at 7:21pm (local), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 TasRacing.com.au Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) originally drew a final field of 15.
The early scratching of Merrick’s Beauty has left 14 hopefuls including $5 favourite I Love It in barrier 12 for Caulfield horseman John Salanitri.
Stephen Baster rides the Artie Schiller four-year-old first-up, I Love It last seen winner over the distance at Ballarat back on November 22.
There are a host of other single figure fancies in the markets then including fellow Victorian Lady Lakshmi ($6.50) who heads towards the Vamos Stakes, the Barry Campbell-trained six-year-old Miss Middleton ($7), Robbie Griffiths’ Nadeem Lass ($8) and Campbell’s other runner Arenzano ($9) drawn well in barrier two.
So will the Bow Mistress Trophy stay at home? Or will an interstate raider beat home the locals?
#14 Wonzee ($11)
Good value on offer in an open field for the Tegan Keys-trained Myboycharlie four-year-old who comes off back-to-back wins over the distance but at Launceston. She’s undefeated over 1200m then and primed for this step up in class after a super consistent start to her career boasting four wins and a third from five starts. She’s had three runs at Hobart too for two wins, the most recent being in May in a Class 1 over 1100m. Travelling nicely and could surprise a few even from the wide barrier (11 into 10).
#10 Miss Middleton ($7)
This daughter of Churchill Downs comes from the very successful Spreyton stables of Barry Campbell and comes off two nice runs this summer. The first was in a Benchmark 82 over 1200 at Launceston on New Year’s Eve before she was dropped back to 1100m on January 25 here at Hobart for a close second to Sh’Bourne Spirit in the Lady Lynette Fillies & Mares Plate. She was beaten only half a length that day and should enjoy getting back up in distance.
#9 Sh’Bourne Spirit ($10)
Lady Lynette Plate winner, Bill Ryan’s Savoire Vivre mare is after back-to-back wins and boasts a tidy record over the distance (7-4-0-0). Is in-form and drops from 57kg to 56.5kg under the WFA conditions here. Consistent type, top hoop Anthony Darmanin stays on and has plenty of claims.
