Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) is the feature race running at Moonee Valley Racecourse tonight (Friday) with eight sprinters set to run down the tricky track.
The betting market for the Abell Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au is hotly contested at the moment with all five single figure hopefuls within the $4 price range.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Fast ‘N’ Rocking is the $4.20 favourite after winning the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) at the end of the spring. The gelding will carry the top weight of 60kg along with defending champion It Is Written.
Will Fast ‘N’ Rocking emerge victorious or will one of the four fresher runners not resuming from a spell steal the race? Check out our 2015 Abell Stakes betting tips below to get a comprehensive idea of who to back in the race.
#2 It Is Written ($4.80)
Robbie Griffiths’ gelding won last year’s Abell Stakes in March and is set to defend his title on Saturday. The six-year-old is in great form after winning a handicap over 1200m at Moonee Valley on December 12 before finishing runner-up to Mourinho in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on January 24, one place better than he finished in last year’s race. It Is Written has an affinity with the Moonee Valley track so except him to finish in the first three – the gelding has placed in 12 of his 18 starts on the tricky circuit. Matthew Allen has retained his ride and the pair will jump from the inside gate which should offset his 60kg weight allocation.
#1 Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($4.20)
The Abell Stakes will set the autumn scene for Fast ‘N’ Rocking. The gelding is inexperienced at the track with just one start, which he did win, but the Hayes & Dabernig’s horse is the race favourite for a reason. Fast ‘N’ Rocking won three of his spring starts, including the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) and managed to place in the Emirates Airline Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day. The gelding will get the ideal start from barrier two with Dwayne Dunn to ride and carry just one kilogram more than the 59kg he won with in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes.
#4 Charmed Harmony ($4.80)
John Sadler’s Charmed Harmony is the market mover of the field after his price shortened from $5. The gelding has not been seen on the track since August, missing both the spring and summer seasons, but he has a solid record on good tracks and has placed in nine of his 16 total starts. Set to carry the minimum weight of 54kg as he jumps from barrier six with Daniel Moor, Charmed Harmony is a safe bet to round out your trifecta. He won a Benchmark 90 over 1400m last time out, cruising home to victory two and a half lengths ahead of Tristam’s Sun.
