Nine juveniles will line-up at Sandown Racecourse on Saturday to contest the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) and increase their chances at making it into the final field for the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in three weeks’ time.
Hoop James Winks is confident that Prompt Return has what it takes to not only win on Saturday but also be a real contender in the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on February 28.
“To win a Diamond you would have to win on Saturday and then progress,” Winks told Sky Racing.
“But I would expect him to win pretty comfortably on Saturday.”
Winks should know what Prompt Return is capable of, considering he rode the colt in all three of his starts during the spring.
After winning his debut at Bendigo back in October, Prompt Return scored an impressive two length victory in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington on November 8. The colt got away well to be on the inside division before leading them up. He kicked away strongly at the furlong, he held his two length winning margin all the way to the line.
Prompt Return ended his season with a second place finish in the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m) at Ballarat two weeks later.
“He’s right up the top just with what he’s been able to achieve,” Winks continued.
“He’s the best looking two-year-old I’ve seen for a long time.
“He’s a big, strong, powerful unit. He’s got a great temperament. He jumps, travels, relaxes and gives you a good kick.
“There’s not much more you can ask for, as a jockey.”
Prompt Return trialled well in his jumpouts ahead of the 2015 Chairman’s Stakes and Winks believes there’s a lot to like about the colt on type as well.
The $3.10 favourite in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au will jump from barrier seven and carry the sole top weight of 58kg.
The colt is also a $15 shot in the Blue Diamond Stakes futures betting. Back the juvenile today to receive up to $250 in a bonus match on your first bet. Just quote code: BETBONUS.
