Geegees Goldengirl Tops 2015 Strutt Stakes Field

Stuart Gandy’s dual Guineas placegetter this Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival Geegees Goldengirl looks the filly to beat in the Strutt Stakes 2015 at Hobart Racecourse on Hobart Cup Day this Monday.

One of the key support races on the program, this year’s $100,000 Listed PFD Food Services Strutt Stakes (2100m) drew a final field of 12 three-year-old fillies.

Leading the line-up and the likely favourite in the markets is Gandy’s Brighton-based daughter of Wordsmith Geegees Goldengirl.

Monday sees her jump from an ideal barrier two draw with apprentice Sigrid Carr retaining the ride after the pair combined on January 25 in the listed Hobart Guineas (2100m).

There they were third past the post behind winner Warrior Of Fire and far from disgraced when beaten under half a length.

Before the Hobart Guineas Geegees Goldengirl also ran a nice second behind former star juvenile Admiral, who runs in the Thomas Lyons Stakes over 1400m on Monday, in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) and is working her way up through the metres with Monday her longest distanced test so far.

Drawn one outside of the sure-to-be top fancy in barrier three is the John Blacker-trained Shayana for top local hoop Daniel Ganderton.

Sharkbit filly Shayana won over 1600m at Hobart two back by a tidy two and a quarter-length margin before going to Launceston on January 21 where she finished a nose away second behind Ryan’s Daughter in the $30,000 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Her last start conqueror is also backing up in the Stutt Stakes for Troy Blacker, the lightly-raced but promising Holy Roman Emperor filly jumping one gate wider than Syanana with gate four.

She’s had just four starts to date for two wins and a second, the Thousand Guineas her first time over further than 1400m making the step up to 2100m on Monday the big challenge for her.

Thousand Guineas third placed Savrajette is another notable hope in the rematch, the Bill Ryan-trained filly after just her second win but travelling well.

Other notable Strutt Stakes hopes this carnival include the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Marocan Diva down from Melbourne, fellow Victorian visitor Tralee Chorus for Patrick Payne, Adelaide-based High Chaparral filly Monopole coming off back-to-back seconds back home and Thousand Guineas fifth placed Crib Point.
