Catkins Odds-On Favourite in 2015 Breeders Classic Betting

10 talented mares will contest the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday, which is this weekend’s feature race, and to no one’s surprise defending champion Catkins is the odds-on favourite to win.

Just four of the ten confirmed runners are offering single figure odds at, led by Catkins at $1.90.

The Chris Waller-trained grey mare will have to overcome a wide start from barrier nine but remains favourite to win back-to-back Breeders Classic titles.

After winning last year’s race, Catkins went on to win the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) and place in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) during the autumn. The five-year-old returned in the spring, finishing in the first three in all four of her starts, including winning the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) and finishing third in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m). Hugh Bowman has retained the ride.

Considering Catkins won from barrier one last year, the mare could face some challenges from the second widest gate on Saturday. She’ll also have nine other talented mares vying for the 2015 Breeders Classic trophy, including three other single figure hopefuls.

  • #9 Mihiri ($7) – A fair way behind Catkins in the Breeders Classic betting is Team Hawkes’ four-year-old mare. Mihiri has finished in the first two in six of her 11 starts and is a last start winner of a Benchmark 80 at Randwick on January 24. The mare has the fitness advantage with three starts this campaign. Will get a good start from barrier five with Tommy Berry to ride.
  • #4 Neena Rock ($8)John Sargent’s six-year-old mare will jump from barrier two with James McDonald to ride. Neena Rock won the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) last October but didn’t figure at all in the Myper Classic, finishing third last. She has placed in all five starts over 1200 metres.
  • #7 Marianne ($9.50) Peter & Paul Snowden’s Marianne is the final single figure betting prospect. The mare finished runner-up in both the Group 2 Armanasco Stakes (1400m) and Kewney Stakes (1400m) as well as won the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) last autumn but missed the spring and majority of the summer after finishing end of the field in the Group 1 Vinery Stakes (2000m). Got her first start in nine months in a Benchmark 85 last month, finishing three-quarters of a length away in third.

Punters looking for a lucrative bet should consider backing Lilliburlero ($14) or Plucky Belle ($11). David Payne’s Lilliburlero will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 10 but finished third in the Group 3 GH Mumm Stakes (1100m) from a wide gate in the spring. Peter Moody’s Plucky Belle will enjoy the inside start from barrier one with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.
