2015 Thomas Lyons Stakes Field Features Hellova Street

A smart field of 10 weight-for-age gallopers makes up the field for Monday’s Thomas Lyons Stakes 2015 on Hobart Cup Day including Barry Campbell’s sure-to-be favourite Admiral.

Drawn on the rails in the 10-horse field for this year’s $100,000 Listed TattsBet.com Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m), the ultra-consistent Mossman gelding Admiral shoots for win number nine at start number 11.

Yet to finish out of the money, the former star two-year-old won the Elwick Stakes – Gold Sovereign Stakes double as a juvenile last February and has been firing on all cylinders again this time in.

Following having nearly seven lengths away from racing he resumed on December 17 and has gone from strength to strength leading into this.

Two back he won over 1400m at Launceston on New Year’s Eve by a commanding four and a half lengths.

Then on January 11 he had his final lead-up storming home to defeat Geegees Goldengirl by an easy three lengths in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m).

He drops back to 1400m, a distance he’s undefeated over, and looks fro win number five at Hobart with his only loss at the track being a third here in his second career run in December of 2013.

While the bulk of his Guineas rivals go into this Friday’s Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m), Campbell didn’t chose to extend his galloper out in distance believing him more of a middle distance sprint type.

Probably the main danger to Admiral completing the Tasmanian Guineas – Thomas Lyons Stakes double is Hellova Street, one of three in the race for Scott Brunton.

Helike four-year-old Hellova Street shoots for his eighth career win at start number 14 and so is also in top form.

He has won two of his three starts this Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, both at black-type level at Launceston.

The first was the Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on December 30 then after a third over 1100m at Hobart he appreciated getting back up to 1200m for the Listed Tattsbet.com Stakes on January 21.

Hobart though holds no fears for Hellova Street who has won three of his four previous starts at the track.

He is also undefeated over the track and distance with two previous 1400m runs leading into the Thomas Lyons Stakes this weekend where he goes up to 59kg under the conditions.

The Seven Mile Beach-based Brunton has two other chances in the race joining their flying stablemate too with Royal Rapture and Streetwise Savoire in barriers five and two respectively.

Clangalang gelding Royal Rapture is looking to break a lengthy winning drought, the Newmarket Handicap runner-up last seen finishing third to Hellova Street in the Launceston stakes race last month.

Anthony Darmanin’s mount Streetwise Savoire meanwhile has won three from seven, and run second in a further two, starts over 1400m and comes off a sixth in the Devonport Cup over 1880m on January 7.

He’s dropping back in distance then for the Thomas Lyons but as mentioned also has a good record over that distance.

Other notable Thomas Lyons Stakes hopefuls including the John Luttrell-trained veteran eight-year-old Pengalas Gee Gee in barrier three for apprentice Sigrid Carr and the Tegan Keys-trained Minute Repeater in the outside barrier.
