2015 Abell Stakes Betting Update

The Listed Abell Stakes (1200m), which was run in mid-March last year, will take place at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Friday night.

Just eight sprinters will tackle the tricky Moonee Valley circuit in a bid to win the $120,000 race, including defending champion It Is Written.

Five of the eight confirmed runners are offering single figure odds in the Abell Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, giving punters a variety of betting options to choose from.

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Fast ‘N’ Rocking is the $3.80 favourite followed by Tudor at $4.

Four-year-old gelding Fast ‘N’ Rocking has had just one start at the Moonee Valley track, which he won last October. He was last seen winning the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) at Sandown on November 1.

Fast ‘N’ Rocking will carry the top weight of 60kg along with It Is Written and jump from barrier two with Dwayne Dunn to ride.

Doug Harrison’s Tudor is on the second line of betting for the 2015 Abell Stakes, set to jump from barrier three with Craig Williams.

Tudor has finished in the first two in half of his four starts at Moonee Valley but has only won once over the distance. The colt was last seen running fifth in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on January 24 after he dropped out in the straight.

The pair faces tough competition in the quest to win the Abell Stakes title, including from three other single figure hopefuls.

  • #2 It Is Written ($4.40) – The defending champion will jump from barrier one with Mattew Allen to ride. The gelding’s affinity with the Moonee Valley circuit will work in his favour – he has placed in 12 of his 18 starts at the track – and he did well to finish runner-up in the Australia Stakes last time out after making a late challenge however he’s never won when carrying 60kg.
  • #4 Charmed Harmony ($4.80)John Sadler’s five-year-old gelding will jump from barrier six with Daniel Moor to ride. This will be Charmed Harmony’s first black-type race after he found success in Benchmark 90 races last August.
  • #3 Barbed ($5.50) John O’Shea’s Barbed is the only other runner set to carry more than the 54kg minimum weight. The four-year-old gelding won the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) at the beginning of the season before finishing out of the placings in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m). He will jump from barrier four with Chad Schofield to ride.
