Spreyton-based trainer Barry Campbell has won the past two editions of the Elwick Stakes and in 2015 saddles-up the likely favourite to make it three straight in the Hobart Cup Day feature for the stable, Siorca.
Campbell has dominated the two-year-old Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival arena in recent years including this race winning with Grand Tycoon (2013) and Admiral (2014) back-to-back.
On Monday this year’s $100,000 Listed Motors Elwick Stakes (1100m) runs with 11 juveniles in the mix including Campbell’s flying Sharkbite gelding Siorca.
Drawn midfield in barrier five for jockey Brendon McCoull, the untapped youngster is yet to finish out of the money with two wins, a second and two thirds from his five runs to date.
His two most recent runs this season have produced back-to-back wins over 1100m at Launceston including a narrow victory over Gee Gees Top Notch in the $30,000 2YO Alpha Bowl (1100m) on January 14 from the same barrier he’s drawn for Monday.
Undefeated then over the distance, the Elwick Stakes will be Siorca’s fourth start at the Hobart track where he is yet to post a win.
Alpha Bowl runner-up Gee Gees Top Notch also backs up in the Elwick on Monday looking to turn the tables on her last start conqueror.
Prepared by John Luttrell at Brighton the Wordsmith filly has an imposing record of two wins and two seconds from her four starts so far, both of her victories being here at Hobart’s Tattersall’s Park.
She defeated Brightness (2nd) and Siorca (3rd) over 1000m at the track on December 19 before a second to third in that race and her biggest danger in Monday’s rematch in the Alpha Bowl three weeks ago.
The only other non-maiden in the mix is then the undefeated Terence Evans-trained Sky Of Stars who has had just the one successful start to date.
Top Melbourne-based hoop Dwayne Dunn, a good friend of the trainer, is down in Tasmania for the ride aboard the promising New Approach colt who will be out to retain his unbeaten status from barrier seven.
He debuted at the track on January 25 when Daniel Ganderton, now without an Elwick ride, guided him to a smart one and a half-length victory in the $14,000 Book Now for Derby Day High Tea 2YO Maiden Plate (1000m).
Runner-up that day was the Stuart Gandy-trained Geegees Double Jo, another daughter of Wordsmith in the race.
Her record shows two wins and a third from four starts, the maiden looking to break through for a win in her black type debut here from barrier 10 with apprentice Sigrid Carr retaining her association.
Gandy also saddles up another widely-drawn hope with Gee Gees Jet in gate nine for fellow apprentice Jake Bayliss, the unraced Wordsmith gelding coming off a huge trial win from earlier in the week.
On Tuesday he stepped out at Hobart over 900m in the fourth heat of the morning and was super slick posting 34.35 seconds to beat the John Luttrell-trained Gee Gees Vicki by an imposing 10 and a quarter lengths.
Runner-up in the trial Gee Gees Vicki also runs in the Elwick with Troy Baker to ride this Wordsmith filly from barrier four in her first start since a fifth to Siorca over 1100m at Launceston on New Year’s Eve.
