Connections of the Chris Waller-trained Epsom Handicap winner He’s Your Man have no hesitations about putting the French import on a float to Melbourne for a first-up run in the CF Orr Stakes 2015 should the nominations list read to their liking.
Winner of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) narrowly during the spring in Sydney, Cape Cross six-year-old He’s Your Man trialled at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday morning.
He finished second in the first hit-up of the day over 1030m but was thrashed by 13 and a quarter lengths by Gerald Ryan’s impressive 2015 Australian Cup-bound Red Excitement.
Despite the big margin Waller’s runner-up impressed his hoop Hugh Bowman with the run and looks on track for a return to racing this month.
“He trialled very nicely,” Waller’s racing manager Liam Prior told Racenet.
“He knuckled down really well the last 300 metres and found the line strong.”
He’s Your Man won three of his six starts last preparation including the Epsom and rounded out his stellar winter – spring campaign with a devastatingly close second behind Happy Trails in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Victoria Derby Day, November 1.
Prior said the stable was now tossing up resuming options for the $750,000 earner with both Sydney and Melbourne appearance being considered.
Should he stay home for his first-up run he will kick things off in the $250,000 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on February 14.
However the team will keep an eye on the quality and number of nominations taken for Melbourne’s $400,000 Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse on the same day with a possible trip south on the cards.
“(We) will keep an eye on the noms for the Orr Stakes,” Prior said.
“We wouldn’t have any hesitation of putting him on a float and sending him down.”
He’s Your Man is also currently nominated for the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington Racecourse on Super Saturday, March 14.
Futures Australian Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have the reigning Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist, now prepared in Newcastle by Kris Lees, as the clear $5 favourite.
The rest of the nominees are then at double figures with He’s Your Man one of the next best fancied at $13 while his trial conqueror Red Excitement is well down the all-in Australian Cup betting markets at $67.
