Godolphin Strengthen 2015 Blue Diamond Bid with Sampeah

Two-year-old colt Sampeah will be deployed from Godolphin’s Sydney stable tonight, heading south to Melbourne ahead of the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 28.

Sampeah is one of eight Godolphin juveniles nominated for the $1 million feature race at Caulfield, strengthening his chances with a solid trial at Randwick on Monday.

The Exceed And Excel colt is a winner of his only start back in November, taking out the Tab.com.au Plate (1100m) one length ahead of Let’s Make It Rain. The colt got back out of the speed battle, easing out before the turn came up. He was still two lengths away at 200 metres but really hit the line well and drew away to win.

He finished third behind stablemate Exosphere in his trial on Monday, with hoop Sam Clipperton never letting the colt go at any stage.

“He trialled well, he got a bit agitated in the gates before hand,” Godolphin racing manager Jason Walsh told TVN.

Sampeah is guaranteed a start in the 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes, currently sitting 12th in the order of entry. This strengthens Godolphin’s bid to win the $1 million race, considering Calaverite is unlikely to run with her focus on the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21 instead.

Other horses nominated for the Blue Diamond Stakes by Godolphin include Group 3 Emirates Airline Plate (1000m) winner Antelucan, Bantam, Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) third Chamarel, Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) third Igraine, Promenades, and Group 3 Blue Diamond fillies Preview (1000m) third Pursuits.

Sampeah will next run in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on February 14 while Calaverite will remain in Sydney for the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) the following week at Rosehill.

Retained Godolphin jockeys William Buick and James Doyle will ride at three meetings during the Sydney autumn carnival. Both jockeys are currently in Dubai for the World Cup carnival but will be available to ride Calaverite in the Golden Slipper.

“If the opportunity arises and it looks like we have the right sort of horses in the main races, John (Ferguson, Godolphin’s bloodstock consultant) is very keen for them to come down,” Walsh said.

“They are retained riders for Godolphin, they are world class riders and we would be very keen to use them in our world class races down here.”
