Geegees Blackflash Heads 2015 Hobart Cup Field

John Luttrell’s veteran galloper Geegees Blackflash will line up in Monday’s Hobart Cup 2015 contesting the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival classic for the fifth straight year.

Carrying the 59kg top weight the evergreen eight-year-old may be getting on in the years but he heads into the $225,000 Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) in as good a form as ever.

Apprentice jockey Ms Sigrid Carr has the ride on the Clangalang gelding from a nice barrier three draw in the 13-starter Hobart Cup field.

Geegees Blackflash hasn’t finished out of the money since November last year winning two of his past four starts.

He ran a close third to Iggimacool in the Listed Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) three back on New Year’s Eve before a second in the Brighton Cup (2100m) with a hefty 61kg before Carr rode him to victory in the $50,000 Summer Cup (2200m) here at Hobart on January 25.

The 62-start warhorse has a strong record over the distance with two wins, two seconds and three thirds from seven runs over the mile and a half.

He’s also had 34 starts at the track for 13 wins, nine seconds and four thirds making him the one to beat on paper.

Geegees Blackflash first contested the Hobart Cup in 2011 finishing 11th to Bid Spotter.

Over the next three years he would improve to win in 2012, run third to Hurdy Gurdy Man in 2013 and finish second behind winning mare Epingle 12 months ago with 60kg on his back – a kilo less than his allocation this year.

Luttrell has also accepted for Hold That Tiger mare Hold True, the six-year-old 54kg lightweight coming off a second over 2100m here from January 25 when carrying 59kg.

Following Geegees Blackflash in the Hobart Cup weights is then the Tony McEvoy-trained interstate raider Pelicano (58kg), the 2013 Werribee Cup winner coming off a sixth to the ill-fated Midsummer Sun in the Gosford Cup from January 9.

Carrying 56.5kg is then Scott Brunton’s class seven-year-old Banca Mo, the Tough Speed gelding drawn one inside of Geegees Blackflash with David Pires to ride from barrier two.

Banca Mo has been in good form this summer with three December runs over shorter distances.

While he boasts two wins from four starts at Hobart he is up from 1600m when runner-up in a weight-for-age mile race at Launceston on December 31.

The Hobart Cup form guide shows a zero beside the distance for Banca Mo but he has been up over 2350m winning over 50m less than Monday’s 2400m proving a genuine stayer.

Also in the mix for the Seven Mile Beach-based Brunton in in-form Tough Speed mare Perplexing, the four-year-old coming off a 2100m win in a Benchmark 62 handicap with 57.5kg at the track on January 25.

She drops to a more manageable 54kg for this Group 3 test and has time to overcome the outside barrier 13 draw.

Also out wide in barrier 12 is Bill Ryan’s also talented four-year-old mare Iggimacool.

The daughter of Savoire Vivre got the better of her Hobart Cup rivals Banca Mo (2nd) and Geegees Blackflash (3rd) under WFA conditions at Launceston on the last day of last year.

She had 57kg that day and then after a four week freshen-up resumed over 2200m here when fifth to Geegees Blackflash late last month in an effort she’ll be out to improve on when dropping to 54.5kg for jockey Brendon McCoull here.

Ryan’s other runner is then drawn one inside the stablemate with the ultra-consistent Genuine Lad in gate 11 for Anthony Darmanin.

A four-year-old son of Ladoni the gelding has finished out of the money only twice from 15 starts, the Devonport Cup runner-up last seen finishing a nose away second to Geegees Blackflash here on January 25.

Other notable hopes then include the Michael Moroney-trained Melbourne raider Garud in gate 10 for travelling jockey Craig Williams and Gary White’s last start Launceston winner Ollie’s Gold.
