A thrilled Gerald Ryan named the Carlyon Cup 2015 on CF Orr Stakes Day in a fortnight as the first-up option for his impressive trial winner at the Rosehill hitouts on Tuesday morning Red Excitement.
The five-year-old Excites gelding surprised his locally-based trainer Ryan, who didn’t expect the horse “to trial that well”, by running away with a barnstorming 13.3 length victory in the opening trial yesterday morning over 1030m.
The Group & Listed jump-out was won in a smart 1:01.40 seconds and saw jockey Brenton Avdulla guide Red Excitement to an all-too-easy victory over the Chris Waller-trained French import He’s Your Man.
A winner of 10 of his 27 starts to date, the winning galloper is now set to run in the $150,000 Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse on February 14 on way to a possible Group 1 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival assignment.
“He’s going a month between runs and he’s going to 1600 metres so that’s why I gave him a trial,” Ryan told Racenet yesterday.
“He’s going to Melbourne for the Carlyon Cup on Saturday week at Caulfield.”
Red Excitement has posted five straight victories over the past 12 months missing over 10 months of racing from February to December last year.
He resumed off the lengthy let-up with a narrow Rosehill win over 1400m carrying 61kg before another close victory this time defeating Tried And Tired by the bob of the head in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in Melbourne on January 17 from a wide barrier 11 of 12 draw.
That performance coupled with his imposing trial win has the $32,500 bargain buy from the 2011 William Inglis and Son Classic Yearling Sale on track for a super autumn season.
Red Excitement is nominated for the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on Super Saturday, March 14.
Futures Australian Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by the now Kris Lees-trained German import Protectionist ($5) who won last year’s Melbourne Cup and is after the same Melbourne – Australian Cup double Fiorente scored in 2013-14.
The horse Red Excitement smashed in yesterday’s trial, Epsom Handicap champ He’s Your Man pays $13 in Australian Cup betting while Ryan’s emerging star represents outstanding value at a juicy $67.
Despite being beaten by a big margin, jockey Hugh Bowman was still pleased with the effort of runner-up He’s Your Man, the Cape Cross six-year-old last seen running second to Happy Trails in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day.
He’s Your Man is heading towards a first-up run in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on February 14, but connections could be tempted to shoot for the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne on the same day depending on the class of the nominations for the elite level.
