It Is Written has boosted his chances of winning back-to-back Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) after drawing the sought after inside jump from barrier one.
The 2015 Abell Stakes, which was run on March 14 last year, has attracted a small field of eight sprinters on the eve of the autumn carnival. The race will run at Moonee Valley this Friday night.
It Is Written and Fast ‘N’ Rocking headline the field, both set to carry the top weight of 60kg, and have scored the two inside starts from barrier one and two respectively.
The Robbie Griffiths-trained It Is Written is the defending Abell Stakes champion after winning a short-head in front of Le Bonsir last March. The six-year-old gelding has run straight through the spring and summer this campaign, not having a break since the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) back in early September.
The gelding really began to shine during the summer, winning a 1200m Handicap at Moonee Valley on December 12 before finishing runner-up in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on January 24 – one place better than he finished in last year’s race.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Fast ‘N’ Rocking will resume in the 2015 Abell Stakes after a successful spring campaign.
The four-year-old gelding placed in four of his five starts, including winning the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) on November 15. Dwayne Dunn will return to ride the gelding.
John O’Shea’s Barbed will jump from barrier four with Chad Schofield to ride and is the only other runner set to carry more than the 54kg minimum weight on 57.5kg.
Barbed won the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) first up this campaign at Canterbury on December 27 before pulling up lame after finishing end of the field in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m).
The other sprinters that accepted for the Abell Stakes include Charmed Harmony, General Offer, Tudor, Just Magical, and Turfane.
John Sadler’s Charmed Harmony has won six of his 16 career starts and placed in a further three. He won a 1400 metre Handicap at Sandown Lake last time out, winning two and a quarter lengths clear of Tristram’s Sun.
The gelding will jump from barrier six with Daniel Moor to ride.
