Two-year-old filly Thurlow is one of 29 juveniles nominated for the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown Racecourse on Saturday following a pleasing barrier trial last week.
Both Thurlow and imported stayer Noble Protector were put through their paces by jockey Craig Williams in trials at Cranbourne last Thursday. While the two horses finished outside the placings, Williams and Qatar Bloodstock’s racing manager David Redvers were happy with the performances.
“David Redvers was here after flying in from New Zealand and he wanted to have a look at them at the start of their preparations, especially Noble Protector,” Williams told Sky Racing.
“I was really happy with how she trialled and while it’s still early in her preparation, she stretched out well.”
Following the trial, Thurlow was nominated for the 2015 Chairman’s Stakes, which will feature the likes of Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) winner Prompt Return and the John O’Shea-trained Bantam.
The two-year-old filly has been allocated the second top weight of 56kg for the sprint race after finishing in the first two in both her career starts.
Robert Smerdon’s Thurlow made her debut in the Group 3 Airline Plate (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, finishing just half a length behind winner Antelucan in second place.
The filly then lined-up in the Listed Santa’s Magical Kingdom Stakes (1000m) 11 days later, which she impressively won a short-head from Miss Gidget. Thurlow jumped away ok but was out sped and found herself in trouble at the 350 metre mark. She managed to get in the clear after that and nailed both Miss Gidget and Mesa on the line.
Thurlow is also nominated for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 28, however the filly is an outside $81 chance at Ladbrokes.com.au. This price will likely shorten if she can impress in the Chairman’s Stakes on Saturday.
