Tony McEvoy’s Pelicano will look to further his stakes success this month with two Group Three races targeted in Tasmania.
The six-year-old gelding has won three Cups in three states and will look to make it four with both the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 9 and the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) on February 25 on the cards.
The gelding won the Listed Murray Bridge Cup (1600m) in South Australia, the Listed Parramatta Cup (2000m) in Sydney, and the Listed Werribee Cup (2600m) in Victoria – all in 2013 – before a sesamoid injury saw him sidelined for a year.
He returned in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 13 almost one year to the day after winning the Werribee Cup but finished midfield to Rudy. He then finished just outside the placings in the Summer Cup (2000m) before a disappointing sixth in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m).
Despite finishing outside the placings in all three of his starts since returning from injury, McEvoy believes Pelicano can make an impact in Tasmania.
“I thought he would be well-suited so he’ll go down for the Hobart and Launceston Cups,” McEvoy said.
“His last start I thought was a little bit plain in the Gosford Cup.
“He was given a good ride and Hugh Bowman was really happy with him but he said he just didn’t get around Gosford. When he had to quicken on the bend he just couldn’t get around there and he stayed on OK to the line.
“He’s trained on beautifully since so I’ll trust that he’s going well and we’ll head to Hobart.
“He’s sound and very well so I’m hopeful that he can find his form.”
28 potential stayers are nominated for the 2015 Hobart Cup with the final field of 17 plus three emergencies to be announced on Wednesday.
Included among the nominations is Darren Weir’s Akzar, Gosford Cup and Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) placer Oriental Lady, and local runner Geegees Blackfish.
