Oakleigh Girl to Resume in 2015 Rubiton Stakes

The Danny Bougoure-trained Oakleigh Girl has not been seen since last autumn when she finished outside the placings in both the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) and Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m).

Oakleigh Girl was due to resume in last month’s Magic Millions Race Day at the Gold Coast but a bruised foot ruled her out.

The three-year-old filly is now once again gearing up for a return after her absence of ten months, set to resume in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse on February 14.

Oakleigh Girl won the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1010m) at Doomben back in December 2013 before finishing runner-up to Unencumbered in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) the following month as a two-year-old.

Following her short-lived autumn campaign in Sydney, the filly returned to Queensland and enjoyed an exhibition gallop between races at Doomben on Saturday. She did everything asked of her, impressing Bougoure, and will have a jumpout before heading south to Melbourne for the first time in the autumn.

The filly made her debut in the Group 3 7News Stakes (1000m) back in November 2013, winning one and a quarter lengths clear of Top Dolly, and is set to return later this month.

“She’s furnished into a lovely filly now. She’s matured and she’s stronger,” Bougoure said.

“Hopefully, she’s in for a good campaign.

“She missed about ten days work so I decided to ease up and set her for the Melbourne carnival.

“She has won in Melbourne and things are going OK so far.”

Following on from the 2015 Rubiton Stakes, Oakleigh Girl would likely progress to the aptly-named Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28. It would be a touching tribute considering the filly was named after the $500,000 race.

Craig Newitt rode the filly in five of her six career starts however since he’s now based in Singapore, Bougoure will need to pick a new jockey to partner her in the autumn. Both Glen Boss and Craig Williams are in the mix.
