Godolphin’s 2015 Golden Slipper Hopes Trial Well

A host of Golden Slipper 2015 hopes from the Godolphin stables have been on show over the past few weeks including two leading chances that trialled at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday morning.

Calaverite and Furnaces were the two big names for trainer John O’Shea at the hit-outs, the latter winning the 14th heat of the morning over 903m in 54.70 seconds.

Ridden by expat Kiwi hoop James McDonald, Exceed And Excel colt Furnaces won his debut at Rosehill over 1100m last October and showed he had come through his break well with his all-the-way trial win.

He held a one and a half-length margin over the Chris Waller-trained Vanbrugh at this morning’s Sydney jump-out and looks on track for a Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival return.

His main aim is set for March 21 back at Rosehill with the world’s richest race for juvenile’s – the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) – on the cards.

Futures Golden Slipper odds are already open at Ladbrokes.com.au and lead by five-time Slipper winning trainer Gai Waterhouse’s undefeated colt Vancouver who won the Canonbury Stakes last Saturday.

Furnaces meanwhile occupies the third line of Golden Slipper betting behind Vancouver and the fellow O’Shea-trained Ottoman ($8) paying $10.

Calaverite meanwhile can be found a little further down the markets at a current quote of $17.

The nicely-bred Lonhro filly caught the eye in early October during the spring in Sydney when winning the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut at Randwick by half a length.

She didn’t win her trial by in the 10th heat was far from disgraced when beaten just under a length to run third behind Waller’s Navua Mist with Sam Clipperton in the saddle.

“They both went good,” O’Shea told Racenet.

Furnaces and Calaverite are likely to come face-to-face first-up Saturday week with O’Shea looking at the $125,000 Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) at Randwick on February 14 as the resuming run for both Slipper-bound youngsters.

“I think both of them will probably kick off in the Lonhro Plate,” he said.

“They need to get to the races and blow out a bit of steam.

“At this stage that’s the race on our agenda.”

As for exciting Exceed And Excel filly Ottoman, her debut produced a win back on December 20 over 1100m at Rosehill.

She is set to trial at Warwick Farm next Monday before a first-up option is locked in for Godolphin’s shortest-priced Golden Slipper chance.

“She’s good and ready to trial on Monday,” O’Shea said.
