Burnstone Heading to 2015 Blue Diamond Prelude

Robbie Griffiths had considered taking two-year-old colt Burnstone straight to the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 28 after his impressive debut victory at Sandown on January 26 but after the colt pulled up in fantastic form will give him one more run before the $1 million feature race.

Burnstone scored a surprise victory in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (1000m) two weeks ago, considering his starting price was $12 at Ladbrokes.com.au. The colt was not far from the tail on the inside of runners and found himself some four lengths back on the fence. He began to charge on the rails and quickly put several lengths on his rivals before roaring away to win three and a half lengths clear of Top Me Up with Kirabo a further length and a quarter away in third.

The two-year-old recovered quickly from the race, licking out his feed bin, and looking as though he hadn’t even raced the next morning. Griffiths also noted the colt returned home from the race at the same weight he raced with (432kg) and continued to put on more.

Because of all this, and the fact that there is five weeks between the Preview and 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes, Burnstone will head to the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (1100m) at Caulfield on February 14 – the first official meeting of the autumn.

“He’s come through the run so well,” Griffiths told Sky Racing.

“He was very fresh on Saturday and he’ll need another run before the Diamond.

“I think he will get too above himself being a colt with almost five weeks between races and I don’t think it will hurt him going to the Prelude, otherwise I’d just be trialling him at home anyway.

“His signs are really encouraging.”

Burnstone is on the fifth line of betting in the Blue Diamond futures market at Ladbrokes.com.au, offering odds of $11 along with Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) winner Of The Brave. Mick Price’s Secret Agenda is the $4.80 favourite and will enjoy a course proper gallop today before returning in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies next Saturday.
