Blue Diamond Hopes in 2015 Inglis Premier Nominations

A number of 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes hopefuls are nominated for the Inglis Premier at Sandown Racecourse this weekend as are a few proven performers with different Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival aims.

The $250,000 2YO Inglis Premier (1000m) this year attracted 18 two-year-old entries, a number of which are still in the mix for the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

Third declarations for the classic closed last week and of the Inglis Premier nominees heading towards the Blue Diamond at Caulfield Racecourse on February 28, the best fancied in the early markets is the unraced Robbie Griffiths-trained Deja Blue.

A smart looking grey Denman filly, Deja Blue is a $21 chance in the all-in Blue Diamond Stakes odds that are led by fellow fillies Secret Agenda ($4.80) and Fontiton ($5).

While Saturday will be her debut, Deja Blue had a trial at Cranbourne last Thursday and caught the eye with a tidy two length win over 800m in a sharp 45.74 seconds.

The other most notable Blue Diamond entry in Saturday’s nominations is the also unraced Keen Array for David Hayes & Tom Dabernig.

Paying $26 to score an upset Blue Diamond Stakes result at the end of the month, the Bel Esprit colt trialled at Sandown on January 13.

He was last in the five-starter hit-out over 800m but the form from that trial is top class with the John O’Shea-trained Mesa winning by three lengths before a fifth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on Australia Day.

Of the Inglis Premier nominees, seven have had a previous start including two that will go into the race if accepted as non-maidens.

The first of those is the Tony McEvoy-trained Adelaide raider Manhattan Blues who has had two starts for a win and a sixth.

The victory was on debut over 1000m at Morphettville Parks on January 10 before his sixth to Burnstone, now a $10 chance for the Group 1 at Caulfield, in the BD Colts and Geldings Preview.

The only other previous winner is then Kris LeesMoment Of Music, the Hinchinbrook filly boasting a nice record so far with two wins and a second from three starts.

Her first win was at Scone back in November before she resumed at the same track on January 23 to beat home Pacific Region over 1100m by half a length.

Also coming off some promising early career form is McEvoy’s other entry, Written Tycoon gelding Stoker.

He debuted on December 27 at Moonee Valley for a second to Headwater before a last start third behind Certain Ellie back home in Adelaide when beaten only three-quarters of a length on January 24.

Other notable 2YO Inglis Premier entries include the Robbie Laing-trained Stylemaker and Jameka.

Stylemaker debuted with a fourth, albeit beaten over eight lengths, behind the impressive six length winner Fontiton in the Inglis Banner back on Cox Plate Day during the spring.

Her first-up run left a fair bit to be desired however when second last crossing 14th behind the same filly in the Blue Diamond (Fillies) Preview on January 26.

Jameka meanwhile debuts on the weekend after the Ciaron Maher-trained daughter of Myboycharlie blitzed her rivals in a Caulfield jumpout last week.

See below for the full list of nominations, the field and barrier draw due out on Wednesday morning.
