Tawteen on Trial for Dubai in 2015 Lightning Stakes

After winning a 955 metre challenge at Moonee Valley on Friday night, three-year-old filly Tawteen will take on some of the best sprinters in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 21.

While the filly’s trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig had initially considered the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28 for Tawteen as an autumn first-up run, they believe the smaller field of the 2015 Lightning Stakes will work in her favour.

However that doesn’t mean the race won’t be a test for the Black Caviar close relation, considering the world’s highest rated sprinter Lankan Rupee and Group 2 Tab.com.au Stakes (1200m) winner Deep Field are expected to feature in the field.

“It will be a test,” Hayes told Sky Racing.

“She will be racing out of her class but I think the tempo of the Lightning will suit her down the straight. I think on the minimum weight she’ll run well.”

Tawteen has finished in the first three in eight of her nine career starts and enjoyed plenty of success during the spring. The filly won the Listed Crockett Stakes (1200m) and placed in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m), Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m), and Group 3 Gucci Stakes (1100m).

She was very fresh when resuming on Friday night and worked hard for the first 600 metres.

Hayes & Dabernig are also considering taking Tawteen to Dubai for the World Cup night on March 28, with the filly a possible runner in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m). However she’ll need to finish in the first three in the Lightning Stakes for the trainers to consider it.

“I’m going to put her on trial for the World Cup night in the Lightning,” Hayes said.

“If she runs well in the Lightning – she has to finish one, two or three – we might gain an invite to the 1000-metre Group One up the straight in Dubai.”

If Tawteen earns an invite she will join stable mate Tashbeeh, who is already confirmed to head to Dubai for the carnival.
