Fast ‘N’ Rocking to Resume in 2015 Abell Stakes

A small yet classy field of eight sprinters has been nominated for the Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse this Friday.

Fast ‘N’ Rocking and It Is Written lead the nominations with one resuming after a two and a half month spell and the other nearing the end of his summer campaign.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Fast ‘N’ Rocking won three of his five spring starts, including the Listed Italktravel Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m). The four-year-old gelding was one off the fence just behind the leading few but swept up the middle and took the lead with 200 metres to go. He kept bobbing and got the win a short-head from Generalife.

Robbie Griffiths’ It Is Written raced straight through the spring and summer, not having a rest since September, but after scoring second place in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on January 24 the trainer has opted to continue on to the 2015 Abell Stakes.

It Is Written won last year’s Abell Stakes after finishing third in the Australia Stakes. After finishing one better in this year’s Australia Stakes, just a head behind Mourinho, he is well placed to defend his title.

Tudor will also go to the Abell Stakes via the Australia Stakes, in which the Doug Harrison-trained colt finished fifth.

John O’Shea’s Barbed is another nominated horse for the Abell Stakes. The four-year-old gelding won the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on December 27 but finished outside the placings next time out in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m).

Rounding out the nominations is Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) minor placer Turfane, Just Magical, John Sadler’s Charmed Harmony, and Patrick Payne’s Cellarmaster.
