A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Gai Waterhouse’s talented two-year-old colt Vancouver proved the disbelievers wrong on Saturday after he dominantly won the Group 1 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.
Vancouver opened the Canonbury Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au as the $3.50 favourite before his price drifted out to $5, making him third favourite in the race of six.
Partnered with Tommy Berry for the first time, Vancouver settled near last in the small field before rounding up to his rivals in the straight with an impressive burst of speed. He gunned down the leader Outreach ($3), winning three quarters of a length in front of the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained colt, with Chamarel ($5.50) a further three lengths behind in third.
Berry never panicked in the 2015 Canonbury Stakes sprint race, even though the jockey admitted he didn’t intend to get so far back.
“I just allowed him to find his stride and once he balanced up I knew he would finish strong,” Berry told TVN following the race.
Vancouver has now won two from two after scoring the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) last October. Waterhouse was thrilled with the victory, going as far as to compare the colt to five-time Group One winning Pierro.
“You just can’t beat the spring form and he showed in the Breeders Plate how good he is,” Waterhouse said.
“He is the most exciting colt since Pierro, and he actually looks a bit like him too.
“He’s very special. He pulled up terrific, he was very courageous.”
The colt is now the $7 favourite in the Golden Slipper futures betting at Ladbrokes.com.au after being shortened from $11, overtaking Ottoman for the top spot.

However there’s a long time before the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) is run on March 21 so Vancouver will next be seen in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) in three weeks’ time with further races en route to the Slipper still up in the air.
