Palazzo Pubblico On Trial for 2015 The Vanity

Three-year-old filly Palazzo Pubblico has won all three of her starts this campaign and will vie for her fourth at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. However this win will mean that much more as trainer Sam Kavanagh revealed the filly will be on trial for a trip to Melbourne.

Palazzo Pubblico will race against eight open-age mares in the $85,000 Schweppes Handicap (1400m) on Saturday, for which she is the $5 third favourite in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The filly will jump from barrier six with Brenton Avdulla to ride and carry the minimum weight of 53kg but must compete against more experienced rivals, including Mardi ($2.60) and Bella Galeano ($4.60).

Kavanagh noted that if the filly could win the Schweppes Handicap he would have to give her a chance at black-type racing in Melbourne against her own age group.

“She only has the 53kgs and she is in very good form, so if she won again we’d have to give her a chance at a good race against her own age in that race in Melbourne,” Kavanagh explained to Racing Network on Friday morning.

The trainer highlighted the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington Racecourse on February 21 as the ideal first-up autumn run for the filly that has also been nominated for the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 7.

Palazzo Pubblico finished outside the placings in her first two starts last June but after five months in the spelling paddock returned to win her maiden at Wyong on December 18.

The filly then went on to win a Benchmark 67 over 1200m at Warwick Farm on January 7 as well as the Drummond Golf Handicap (1200m) ten days later. After racing up outside the leader, Palazzo Pubblico trailed by half a length into the bend before hitting the front at the 200 metre mark. She kept striving her hardest to draw clear in the final stages and won by three quarters of a length.

“She’s doing everything right and it’s great to win a few races for owner Gerry Harvey, who has been a fabulous supporter of mine,” Kavanagh said.
