Lucky Liberty On Trial for 2015 Australian Guineas

Convincible isn’t the only horse beginning its 2015 Australian Guineas preparation in the Flemington Rose Garden Handicap (1420m) on Saturday.

Henry Dwyer is also searching for a win in the $80,000 race with his three-year-old gelding Lucky Liberty.

The gelding is one of ten horses running in the Flemington Rose Garden Handicap, set to jump from barrier eight with Michelle Payne as jockey. He is the $2.40 firm favourite to win the race at Ladbrokes.com.au after impressively winning both of his two previous starts by three lengths.

Lucky Liberty won his maiden at Mornington over 1200 metres on December 28 before taking out a Benchmark 64 at Sale on January 15. The gelding was eased from his barrier and settled at the tail of the field, remaining there until he switched deep rounding the home turn. He then showed a good turn of foot, hitting the lead at the 100 metre mark before going on to win easily.

Even with these impressive victories under his belt, Lucky Liberty has apparently improved significantly since his last run.

“Going into both of his runs to date I’ve been pretty easy on him knowing that he’s got really good ability and trying to make sure he stays together in one piece,” Dwyer told RSN’s Racing Ahead.

“He’s come out of the run at Sale really well. It was realistically just a bit more than a track gallop but he’s certainly come on a lot more fitness-wise than he had going into his first two runs.”

Even so, it will all be for naught if Lucky Liberty cannot win tomorrow. Dwyer will only press on towards the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) with the colt if he emerges victorious in the Flemington Rose Garden Handicap.

“He’d have to win tomorrow obviously then we’d go forward to the C.S. Hayes at Flemington in three weeks’ time and then on to the Guineas two weeks after that,” he said.

“If he does get beaten tomorrow it’s not the end of the world because there’s a nice race for him at Moonee Valley in a fortnight.”
