Expressway Stakes 2015 Betting Tips & Selections

This Saturday at Rosehill Racecourse one of the last Sydney Summer Racing Carnival features will run with the 2015 Expressway Stakes taking centre stage, betting tips for which are found below.

Weary

There are 11 hopefuls making up the field for the $200,000 Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) on the weekend with the Paul Messara-trained three-year-old Panzer Division the favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au.

First-up for the season in his first run since a fifth to Hampton Court in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in October the Redoute’s Choice colt has the outside barrier (11) to overcome but pays $3.30 to do so.

He is followed in the current Expressway Stakes betting markets by Chris Waller’s revamped import Weary ($5.50), his multiple Group 1 winning stablemate Boban ($7), the in-form That’s A Good Idea ($7.50) also wide in barrier 10 and market mover Driefontein ($9 into $8.50).

So will the single-figure hopes take out it out or is there an upset Expressway Stakes result on the card this weekend from a double figure hope such as the Peter Moody-trained Thermal Current ($11) or proven performer over the track and distance Territory ($13)?

1st

#4 Weary ($5.50)

Waller’s French import is proven in the mud and with a Heavy track very likely that’s a key factor. He’s had five runs on Heavy going for two wins and a third that was in the Doncaster Mile last autumn. A dual Group 1 placegetter from last April and while his spring form was sluggish he’s ticking all the boxes to bounce back according to jockey Tommy Berry who is confident first-up Weary will be hard to hold out with the conditions working in his favour from barrier four. Good Rosehill trial leading up to this and showed enough to suggest he’ll be flying fresh here.

2nd

#10 Driefontein ($8.50)

In a race full of horses just gearing up for an autumn over longer distance races, Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 winning mare is one of the genuine sprinters better suited to the 1200m. She has had 14 runs over the distance for four wins and three thirds so should be right in the finish. The wet is a bit of an unknown though as she’s had just one Heavy track start, and her Soft track form is a bit iffy (7-1-1-0). If she gets through the ground she’ll be a top chance at a nice price.

3rd

#11 Panzer Division ($3.30)

Race favourite based on his strong form on rain-affected going with a win and a second from two Heavy-track runs including the Group 3 Ming Dynasty win last time in. Finished his last campaign with two Group 1 fifths but will need to handle the outside barrier. Is also yet to race at Rosehill but has won his only other first-up run and his only other 1200m assignment so ticks plenty of boxes for those staying on the favourite.
