Waterhouse Set to Dominate Rosehill Meeting

Gai Waterhouse could saddle up to five horses across three black-type races at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, depending on track conditions.

The trainer’s Tulloch Lodge stable is set to begin autumn campaigns for a number of its big prospects but the wet weather in Sydney has put plans in a tailspin.

Several trials were washed out on Tuesday which forced the midweek Warwick Farm meeting to be postponed until Friday which in turn has pushed back another set of crucial barrier trials until next week.

Impressive two-year-old colt Vancouver was set to trial before the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on Saturday, however the shifting schedule has thrown a spanner in the works.

If Waterhouse opts to run the colt in the 2015 Canonbury Stakes over a trial next week, he’ll be serious competition to the other five runners according to stable representative Mark Newnham.

“Breeders’ Plate winners are generally pretty good horses,” Newnham told Sky Racing.

“I wouldn’t swap him for anything else.”

Vancouver is the only runner not making his debut on Saturday after winning the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) in October. He will be joined by stable mate Ulster.

Waterhouse will also deliver a dual-pronged attack on the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) in the form of Giulietta and Pierrette while the trainer will be represented by Driefontein in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m).

The five-year-old mare’s chances at winning the $200,000 feature race have lowered following the downpour considering she has placed in just one of her seven starts on soft/heavy tracks.

However Driefontein has apparently blossomed since returning from the Gold Coast earlier this month where she ran fourth to stable mate Spurtonic in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m).

“Her run first-up was good but not great. It was a good improvement to the Gold Coast and Blake Shinn worked her this week – he’s riding her on Saturday – and he was really happy with her work,” Newnham said.

“Most of our horses had a good gallop on Monday so going into the weekend, Gai is pretty happy with them.”
