With most, if not all, of the runners likely heading to the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on March 9, the Doriemus Handicap is the perfect first-up run.

Therefore it is no surprise that the likes of Akzar, Renew, and Averau are among the 11 confirmed horses.

Darren Weir will deliver a dual-pronged attack after accepting with both Akzar and Tooleybuc Kid. The eight-year-old gelding Akzar headlines the field after finishing in the first two in six straight starts during last autumn, which included winning the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m).

Akzar will jump from barrier seven with Brad Rawiller to ride, carrying the top weight of 60.5kg.

Five-year-old gelding Tooleybuc Kid has finished outside the placings in all three of his starts this campaign. He will jump from barrier four with apprentice jockey Harry Coffey.

Renew travelled to Australia during the spring with British trainer Marco Botti with Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) ambitions, however the $6.2 million race was quickly ruled out when the five-year-old gelding finished end of the field in both the Group 2 Herbert Power (2400m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

After transferring to the care of Archie Alexander, Renew went on to finish runner-up in the Visit Victoria Plate (2800m) before winning the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m).

The gelding is beginning his first full season in Australia early, with Alexander keen to give the stayer plenty of opportunities before the ‘race that stops the nation’. He will jump from barrier nine with Chris Symons to ride in the 2015 Doriemus Handicap.

Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison’s Averau has finished in the first two in all four of her past starts, which includes winning the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) on January 1 by three and a half lengths.

The mare is a confirmed starter for the 2015 Adelaide Cup but with three months between each race needs to race in one or two races to keep fresh.

Averau won the Bagot Handicap from the widest gate and will have to do it once again after drawing barrier 11. Linda Meech has retained the ride and the mare will carry the minimum weight of 54kg.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Extra Zero has placed in all nine of his starts this campaign, four of which were over the same distance as the Doriemus Handicap.

The Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) third placer will jump midfield from barrier six and carry just 54.5kg after apprentice jockey Regan Bayliss makes his claim.

Chris Waller’s duo Fulgur and Index Linked will start in neighbouring gates after drawing ideally in barriers two and three while the Bryce Stanaway-trained Crafty Cruiser has drawn the inside run from barrier one.
