Schofield to Partner 2015 Newmarket Handicap Hopeful Earthquake in Trial

Chad Schofield will partner a bevy of Godolphin-bred horses during a set of barrier trials at Cranbourne on Thursday, including Group One winner Earthquake.

The jockey is hopeful that the set of trials can lead to further partnerships with the racing giant, particularly heading into the autumn.

“I’m doing a lot of trackwork for them. I’m in a good position with them in their Melbourne stable so hopefully I can build up a strong association in Melbourne with Godolphin,” he told TVN on Wednesday.

Earthquake was among the 57 nominated sprinters for the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington Racecourse on March 14.

The three-year-old filly has already earned her connections over $1.6 million in prize money after winning the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) last year as a juvenile before finishing runner-up in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) two months later.

After five months in the spelling paddock, Earthquake scored minor placings in both the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) in Sydney before travelling to Melbourne to win the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m).

The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1 was the filly’s only finish outside the first three after she finished six and a half lengths behind winner Brazen Beau in eighth place.

Following a spell, Earthquake is ready to begin her autumn preparations with tomorrow’s barrier trial.

Schofield’s rides tomorrow will, for the most part, be aboard juveniles, including Antelucan.

The hoop previously rode the two-year-old filly in the Group 3 Airline Plate (1000m) at Flemington on November 4, which they won by half a length.

“I’m really looking forward to riding Antelucan, the filly I won on Melbourne Cup day,” Schofield said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how she has progressed going towards the Diamond.”
