Rescheduled 2015 Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap Field

After a washout at Doomben Racecourse last weekend the rescheduled Nudgee Fillies and Mares Handicap 2015 runs at the track this Saturday with a 12 horse field confirmed for the summer showdown.

Due to run as Doomben Race 8 at 4:05pm (local time), the $100,000 Listed Evergreen Turf Nudgee Fillies and Mares Handicap (1200m) is still likely to be run on a rain-affected track with more wet weather in Brisbane over the week.

To carry the 59kg top-weight is the rails-drawn Tukiyo for Toowoomba’s Lacey Morrison.

The Haradasun mare won at home over this distance by a nice two length margin on Soft going on New Year’s Eve before a disappointing 12th when outclassed at the Gold Coast earlier this month in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Quality (1300m).

She’s back down in distance and will be better suited to the soft track this weekend however but must handle those big kilos.

Following in the Nudgee Fillies and Mares Handicap weights are then Little Brown Horse (58.5kg) and Breakfast In Bed (58kg) drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers two and 10 respectively.

Kelly Doughty’s Waterford Road mare Little Brown Horse comes off some credible form in black-type company this summer including two fifth place finishes on Soft tracks.

The first was behind Tarloshan in the Listed Just Now Quality (1350m) here at Doomben last month and then most recently she finished under three lengths away from Gundy Sun in open company in the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast on January 3.

Breakfast In Bed, a Jim Byrne mount this weekend, also ran in the Just Now for a brave second when beaten only 1.5 lengths.

She had the 54kg minimum that day though but handled 56.5kg at the Gold Coast on December 27 to win a Benchmark 85 against her own kind with half a length to spare over the runner-up Endless Shadow.

Endless Shadow, from the Eagle Farm stables of Peter Hulbert, also runs in the Fillies and Mares Handicap in Brisbane this weekend and is the only other last start winner at the track.

She improved on her second to Breakfast In Bed when returning to the Gold Coast on Magic Millions Day for a three-quarter length victory over Anna Lizzie in the Fillies & Mares Quality Handicap.

The Dane Shadow six-year-old did it from a wide barrier 13 draw with Tegan Harrison riding on 54kg.

Saturday she’ll get a better run from barrier four but must handle 54kg with Brad Stewart replacing Harrison who rides the Mick Mair-trained Bradbury’s Luck four-year-old Queen Of Lochs.

Queen Of Lochs jumps one inside of Endless Shadow from gate three and boasts an excellent record at the track (8-2-2-2), over the distance (6-2-3-0) and is also a previous winner over the track & distance (2-1-1-0).

Her two latest runs have produced two second place finishes, Harrison aboard for both, firstly in a Class 6 behind Lock’s Legend on New Year’s Day and then over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast behind Diamond Fund when carrying 59kg from barrier 10 (of 13) on January 17.

Other hopes coming off a nice lead-up run include the Ben Currie-trained Toowoomba visitor Grey Countess (barrier six), Diamond Trial (barrier seven) and Saturn Rock out wide in gate 11.

Murtajill four-year-old Grey Countess was runner-up to Saturday’s top-weight Tukiyo back home on December 31 and is looking to break her Doomben duck having failed to win in her nine previous starts at the track.

Diamond Trail meanwhile ran first-up here on January 21 for a distant second when beaten nearly five lengths over 1050m but should be improving over more distance, while Saturn Rock comes off a third at Ipswich from January 14.
