Pickabee Ready for 2015 Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap Redo

After the meeting at Doomben Racecourse last Saturday was washed out, all races including the Listed Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap (1200m) were rescheduled for the coming Saturday.

The majority of horses that were set to run last week are confirmed for the rescheduled race, however one notable absence is Missy Longstocking.

The Liam Birchley-trained mare was favourite to win the 2015 Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap following a third place finish to Straturbo in the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) on January 10.

Birchley chose not to re-nominate the mare for Saturday’s race, electing to take her to Melbourne for the autumn. Her campaign could begin as soon as February 14 in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse.

“I didn’t want to run Missy Longstocking second up on a possible wet track with 59kgs. I have given her a little freshen up and we will tackle the Rubiton at this stage,” he told Sky Racing.

“Depending on how she goes we will probably then push on into the Melbourne autumn carnival.”

One person in particular who is happy with the news is Pickabee’s trainer Caitlin Lavin, considering her main concern with the race last Saturday was Missy Longstocking.

Pickabee will carry 56kg instead of 54kg in the do-over considering the top weighter is no longer in the field and will jump from barrier eight with Ryan Wiggins in the saddle. The draw didn’t work as well in the five-year-old mare’s favour this time, since she was due to enjoy the inside jump from barrier one originally.

“Obviously we would like a black type win for her and this looks a nice race,” Lavin said.

Pickabee was also last seen in the Magic Millions Sprint but didn’t have as good a time as Missy Longstocking.

“I felt a bit like a bad mum after that run. It really was throwing her in the deep end to tackle 1100m first up,” Lanvin continued.

“We had a three hour trip to get to the Gold Coast and it knocked her around. She lost about 17kgs on the day.

“She is back to her brightest and put most of the weight back on.”

The track at Doomben will likely be soft following light rainfall on Wednesday but Pickabee should make easy work of it considering the mare has won twice in the going.
