Averau Continues On 2015 Adelaide Cup Path

Averau earned her shot at the two mile Adelaide Cup at Morphettville on March 9 after impressively winning the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) on January 8, however the three month gap between the two races means the mare needs a freshen up race in between.

The Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison-trained mare will drop down to 2000 metres for the first time since October after finishing in the first two in all of her five past starts.

“It’s probably a shame the Adelaide Cup wasn’t two or three weeks after the Bagot because she came through that race terrific,” Widdison told Sky Racing.

Averau worked over from the widest gate in the Bagot Handicap to sit second off the leader before striking the front around the bend. The mare put two lengths on her rivals with 400 metres to go and just kept on rolling before roaring away to lengthen her winning margin to three and a half lengths.

The mare is one of 11 horses tackling the Doriemus Handicap on Saturday, alongside Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) winner Renew, Akzar, and Extra Zero. She has once again drawn the widest start with Linda Meech to ride.

Averau is a $7.50 shot in the Doriemus Handicap betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, for which Darren Weir’s Akzar is the $2.70 favourite.

Widdison revealed that Averau will follow Saturday’s race up with the Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on February 20 before heading to the 2015 Adelaide Cup two weeks later.

“We thought we would run her over 2000 metres just so it wasn’t too long between runs and the plan is to go three weeks into a 2500-metre Listed race at Moonee Valley and then two and a bit weeks into the Adelaide Cup,” Widdison continued.

“She won’t disgrace herself [on Saturday] but you would think she would probably get left flat-footed at some stage and just keep grinding away like she does.”
