Waller and Waterhouse Dominate 2015 Widden Stakes Nominations

Nominations for the 2015 Widden Stakes have been released, with 15 two-year-old fillies being declared for the Rosehill Gardens race this Saturday.

Both Chris Waller and Gai Waterhouse dominated the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) nominations with three horses each.

Waller has nominated Always Allison, Echo Queen, and Micucci for the race while Waterhouse has offered up English, Giulietta, and Pierette as potential starters in the $150,000 race.

Always Allison will make her debut for Waller following two winning barrier trials in January. Echo Queen made her debut in the Happy Australia Day Handicap (1200m) at Sandown Racecourse on Monday, managing to score a minor placing.

The filly was no match for winner Serenade, who won five lengths running away from runner-up I’m Not Sure.

Micucci debuted at Rosehill late last year, missing out on a placing but running just one and a half lengths behind winner Ottoman. The filly then raced over the same track and distance two weeks later but a jump from the outside gate saw the filly finish fifth.

English will also make her debut for Waterhouse in the 2014 Widden Stakes while Giulietta and Pierette both won their respective maidens.

Giulietta is a $17 hopeful in the early 2015 Golden Slipper betting at Ladbrokes.com.au following her win at Rosehill on January 3.

The filly led the field of 12 in the Tab Place Multi Plate (1100m) after getting brilliantly away. She steadied the tempo and travelled well in front before dashing clear at the 300 metre mark. Giulietta went on to win decisively by two and a half lengths.

Pierrette won at Randwick back in October but Waterhouse opted to rest the filly for the remainder of the spring, keeping her fresh for the autumn.

Calaverite and Igraine, who were first and second in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) last October, could have the chance to square off against each other again after both found themselves nominated for the Widden Stakes.

Danny Bougoure has nominated fresh Egyptian Melody, who will travel to Rosehill Gardens without even a barrier trial to her name, while Bart & James Cummings have dually nominated Tempt Me Not and Yattarna.
