Ninth Legion Wins 2015 Carrington Stakes First-Up

The Team Hawkes-trained Ninth Legion resumed a winner on Saturday after taking out the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

The five-year-old galloper, who was a $6 shot at to win the 2015 Carrington Stakes, showed his class in the first race of his campaign, winning one and three quarter lengths clear of $2.30 favourite That’s A Good Idea.

After jumping well from barrier one with hoop James McDonald, Ninth Legion snuck along the inside rail in the straight before powering to the line. Peter & Paul Snowden’s That’s A Good Idea was runner-up while the John O’Shea-trained Haussman was another head behind in third.

“He hadn’t won for a while before today but I think he was a bit better than these horses,” McDonald told TVN.

“His run in the Epsom was very good, he always tries his best and he really likes firm tracks.

“Early in his campaign last preparation he just kept hitting wet tracks, today he got on top of the ground and showed what he can do.”

James McDonald rode in all eight races at the Randwick meeting at Saturday, winning half of his starts.

The hoop began the day winning with Haptic in the Tab Place Multi Plate (1000m) before taking out a Benchmark 80 over 1800 metres with Centre Pivot and another with Mihiri over 1200 metres.

“I needed it, the other boys were getting away from me,” McDonald said.

“It doesn’t take long to slip away here in Sydney so I am glad to be back amongst the winners.”

Ninth Legion scored two minor placings during the spring in both the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) before just running short of the first three in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

The gelding’s autumn campaign has yet to be finalised but make sure your betting account is ready to go to follow his season.
