Black Opal Considered for Slipper Hope Sebring Sun

Warwick Farm’s Gary Portelli is considering a trip to Canberra for the city’s premier race, the Black Opal Stakes in early March for his 2015 Golden Slipper hope Sebring Sun.

Portelli has big Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival plans for the young chestnut Sebring colt who has had two career runs but remains a maiden.

He debuted at Royal Randwick on October 11 last year in a two-year-old set weights plus penalties sprint over 1000m and finished only a neck away second behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Snippetson filly Pierrette.

Then after an impressive four and a quarter length trial win over 800m at Warwick Farm earlier this month he ran again back at Randwick on Saturday.

Portelli started him in the $85,000 TAB Place Multi Plate (1000m) but he could only manage to cross nearly three lengths away third behind the $2.20 favourite, the John O’Shea-trained Haptic.

While not totally unhappy with the run, Portelli admits it may have been a mistake to run Sebring Sun in the race.

“In hindsight, perhaps he wasn’t tuned right up for Saturday but there is plenty to work with,” Portelli told AAP on Tuesday.

The youngster is heading towards a run in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) taking place at Rosehill Gardens on March 21.

Before then he is likely to have one or two more runs to help get him up to Group 1 class.

Portelli is looking at a number of options but named Warwick Farm’s $100,000 Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on Chipping Norton Stakes Day, February 28, as a likely next-up run.

From there serious consideration will go to running the up-and-comer in the lucrative $250,000 Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) at Canberra Racecourse on March 9.

“We have a few options and will consider the Lonhro Plate and the Black Opal,” Portelli said.

Futures Golden Slipper odds are out now at with Godolphin’s Exceed And Excel filly Ottoman, a winner on debut at Rosehill last month, the $8 favourite.

Sebring Sun is also listed in the all-in Golden Slipper betting markets at a more generous $26.
