Despite nominations being extended for the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m), it looks as though just seven two-year-old colts and geldings will tackle the Rosehill Gardens race on Saturday.
Gai Waterhouse could be dually represented in the race after nominating both Ulster and Vancouver.
Ulster is set to make his debut for the trainer in Saturday’s $150,000 race following two runner-up finishes in barrier trials at Randwick Racecourse in the past month.
Vancouver won the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) back in October and should head Waterhouse’s team of up to six horses in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21.
The colt was fast out to find the front in October’s race and kept kicking all the way, holding the favourite off in a strong leading effort. He is a $13 shot in the Golden Slipper futures betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.
“I could have six in there and it’s a particularly smart team … there are some really nice horses coming up too,” Waterhouse told The Sydney Morning Herald earlier this month.
“Vancouver should head the team.”
All other nominated horses are making their debut in Saturday’s Canonbury Stakes. Peter & Paul Snowden’s Outreach was runner-up to Sebring Sun in a Warwick Farm barrier trial at the beginning of the month before winning at Rosehill last Tuesday.
Adam Wadick has nominated Mister Meaner, Team Hawkes could find themselves represented by Mawahibb who was runner-up to Outreach in a trial last week, John O’Shea has nominated Chamarel, and John Sargent could saddle Cashing Up.
