2015 Australia Day Cup Winner Danas Best Banned from Australian Racing

Connections of Danas Best lived through both the highest of highs and lowest of lows on Saturday after the five-year-old gelding won the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Danas Best managed to score a massive victory in the $100,000 black-type race, winning four and a half lengths away from runner-up Permit, however the Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding was found to be bleeding from both nostrils when he got back to the stalls.

This was the second bleed for Danas Best, which means he has received a lifetime racing ban in Australia.

Tulloch Lodge foreman Mark Newnham had to deliver the news to the horse’s connections in the winners’ room as they celebrated.

“The only consolation is that he won, usually when horses bleed they finish last,” Newnham told TVN.

“It was very tough having to tell the owners, they were celebrating what was a very good win and it looked like we had him back to his best.”

Danas Best firmed to $3 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au leading up to the race following his strong run in the Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) on January 10 that saw the gelding miss out on a placing by a nose.

Tommy Berry rode Danas Best to victory in the 2015 Australia Day Cup. The jockey tried to step up the pace with the gelding mid-race but it wasn’t necessary.

The five-year-old controlled the race from the outset before charging away for his four and a half length victory over Permit with Oriental Lady another half length away in third.

“He got his own way in front,” he said.

“On four occasions in the race I had to try to get him to go quicker.

“And it’s great to get a winner for Gai. It’s been a while.”

Danas Best could likely travel to the United States following his ban from Australian racing where anti-bleeding medication is allowed.
