2015 Australia Stakes Betting Tips

A small field of eight sprinters is set to tackle the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. While the field may be small, the race will surely be enthralling as three time Group One winner Dissident resumes along with the likes of Smokin’ Joey and Mourinho.

Mourinho will make his 1200 metre debut at Moonee Valley on Saturday in the Australia Stakes.

Four of the eight runners are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by odds-on favourite Dissident at $1.80.

The Peter Moody-trained horse is a class runner with three Group One victories under his belt and two second placings. This is his race to lose – will one of the other seven hopefuls cause a shocking upset?

Check out the 2015 Australia Stakes betting tips below to get an idea of who to back on Saturday.

1st

#1 Dissident ($1.80

The Peter Moody-trained horse is a legitimate Group One horse and race’s very well fresh. He was runner-up in both the Listed Rosebud (1200m) and Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) following spells and won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in the spring following four months in the spelling paddock. Dissident bled for the first time in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) which saw the horse banned for three months. However he seems in perfect order ahead of the Australia Stakes, despite not winning over the distance before. Will have an excellent run if he can make his way over from barrier six.

2nd

#4 It Is Written ($8)

Robbie Griffiths’ six-year-old gelding is a Moonee Valley track specialist, having won six of his 17 starts and placing in a further five. It Is Written was third in last year’s Australia Stakes and while it’s unlikely the gelding will be able to beat Dissident home in a weight-for-age race, should easily finish in the first three. Matthew Allen should be able to sneak him in after a midfield jump from barrier five.

3rd

#3 Mourinho ($34)

Punters looking for a lucrative outside bet should consider the Peter Gelagotis-trained Mourinho with a win price of $34 or $5.70 to place. The seven-year-old gelding was a late entry for the race following an impressive jumpout on Monday morning. Mourinho is untested over 1200 metres, having never run less than 1400 metres but we wouldn’t be surprised if he scraped through with a placing in the Australia Stakes. Enjoys the Moonee Valley track and will jump well from barrier four.  Had the best results of his career during the spring with minor placings in two group races before his first Group One test in the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).
