2015 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview Field: Fontiton in Barrier 5

Early Blue Diamond favourite Fontiton has come up trumps with a nice barrier five draw for the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview 2015 at Sandown-Hillside this Monday on Australia Day.

A $4.80 chance at Ladbrokes.com.au in their futures Blue Diamond Stakes odds for the $1 million Group 1 at Caulfield on February 28, Robert Smerdon’s Turffontein filly has her second career start and first run of the year in the $150,000 Group 3 Preview this long weekend.

Sixteen two-year-old fillies make up the field for the Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) run over the 1000m, Mark Zahra to ride the sure-to-be top fancy from barrier five.

It is the opening race of the season for Fontiton who has already amassed $173,000 in prize money for connections thanks to her impressive six length win on debut in the Inglis Banner (1000m) at Moonee Valley back on Cox Plate Day, October 25.

One of her main dangers is the other undefeated filly in the Preview field, the Murray Johnson-trained Take Pride jumping from barrier eight with Cory Parish aboard.

The Reward For Effort filly won at Seymour on debut in December then backed up on New Year’s Day at Flemington and won again with Monday her third run over 1000m.

Just one other acceptor for Monday’s showdown has a win on the board already with the David Hayes & Tom Daberning-trained Haybah who gets the inside run from barrier one this weekend.

Haybah, a daughter of top sire More Than Ready, has had four runs making her the most experienced in this line-up for a second and one win.

The victory breaking her maiden status came last start on January 8 at Ballarat over the 1000m where she won by an impressive three lengths with Stephen Baster, who retains the ride for her black-type debut, in the saddle.

Runner-up in that race at Ballarat, Queen Of Wands, has also accepted for the Blue Diamond Preview with the Clarry Conners-trained Not A Single Doubt filly looking to make up some ground to finish closer in her second career start.

Other non-maidens with claims include Snitzel filly Tiz My View who ran third to Take Pride at Flemington at the start of the month and the Phillip Stokes-trained Adelaide raider Comprende.

As for the unraced hopes there are five including the John O’Shea-trained duo of Pursuits and Promendades both drawn wide in barriers 10 and 14 respectively.

A daughter of Lonhro, Promendades won a Rosehill trial on January 6 while the fellow Godolphin-owned Pursuits ran a respectively second when she trialled here at Sandown on January 13.
