Waller Duo Draw Well in 2015 Australia Day Cup

Chris Waller has done well for himself following the barrier draw for the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday.

Of the 11 accepted potential stayers in the race, Waller will saddle two –Multilateral and Permit. Both horses have drawn well, set to jump from barriers two and three respectively.

Eight-year-old gelding Permit will carry the top weight of 59kg with Hugh Bowman to ride while stable mate Multilateral will carry just half a kilogram less with Glyn Schofield as jockey.

Permit won both the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) and Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) last summer but failed to retain either of his titles this season. The gelding has finished outside the placings in all three of his past starts, including the Listed ATC Cup (2000m).

Multilateral won the Tattersalls Club Cup on January 1 ahead of Permit after disappointing results in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m), Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m), and Summer Cup (2000m).

There’s a big discrepancy between Waller’s duo and the rest of the field in the weights with Gallatin (55kg) and Oriental Lady (54.5kg) the only other horses carrying more than the 54kg minimum weight.

The John O’Shea-trained Gallatin will have to overcome a wide start from barrier ten with James McDonald to ride while Kris Lees’ Oriental Lady will jump from barrier four with Brenton Avdulla aboard.

Five-year-old mare Oriental Lady was runner-up in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) last time out while Gallatin was half a length behind in fifth place in the same race.

Paul Perry’s Ghost Protocol has earned an ideal start from barrier one with Kerrin McEvoy to ride. After finishing runner-up in the Tattersalls Club Cup on New Year’s Day, the six-year-old gelding was second last in the Gosford Cup – though it’s worth noting was only two lengths behind winner Midsummer Sun in the fast-paced race.

Danas Best and Off The Rails are both coming to the 2015 Australia Day Cup via the Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) at the Gold Coast on January 10, re-enacting their rivalry.

Gai Waterhouse’s Danas Best just missed out on a placing in the $200,000 race to Off The Rails. The five-year-old gelding will once again ride with Tommy Berry as he jumps midfield from barrier five.

Bjorn Baker’s Off The Rails will jump from barrier eight with Sam Clipperton as jockey.
