Spurtonic Kicks off Doncaster Mile 2015 Campaign

Sydney’s Gai Waterhouse will use Saturday’s Carrington Stakes at Randwick as the latest autumn lead-up for her 2015 Doncaster Mile bound galloper Spurtonic.

The Flying Spur five-year-old won the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) at Caulfield in October of 2013 following a brave fourth, beaten just over half a length, to Boban in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

A host of unplaced runs over the next year and plenty of time on the sidelines after a throat operation however followed.

It was 15 long months without a win but he showed he’d come back in good order after his latest spell with a first-up victory at the Gold Coast on January 10 taking out the Magic Millions Cup (1400m).

“I wouldn’t have put him on a float to Queensland (for the Magic Millions) if I didn’t think he was back to his best. It took me ages to get him back there.

“I said to the owners, ‘roll with me, I’d love to see him on the Gold Coast, and I know you’ll enjoy it because a few of you live up there’. But I wasn’t going to send him unless I thought he’d be competitive.”

A winner of six of his 17 starts to date, Spurtonic has been in top form at home since impressing his Hall of Fame trainer with all his work and how he came through the Gold Coast,” Waterhouse told The Daily Telegraph.

She will now run him at home in Sydney again at Royal Randwick in the $100,000 Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) where he carries the 59kg top weight with Blake Shinn taking over for Hugh Bowman.

Along with the big weight, Spurtonic also has to overcome a wide barrier 11 of 12 draw if he is to enjoy back-to-back wins and retain his undefeated status for 2015.

Long term plans this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival are for the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) back at Randwick on April 4, a major during The Championships Waterhouse believes he could be a nice light weight chance in.

“He could be a lightweight chance in the Doncaster,” she said.

Spurtonic is yet to be added to the markets but soon will be if he continues to impress during the early part of his preparation.
