The 2015 Sydney Cup is looming as the major autumn carnival aim for the Gai Waterhouse-trained Danas Best who races in the Australia Day Cup at Royal Randwick this weekend.
A winner of six of his 19 starts, Danasinga gelding Danas Best was last seen in the winners’ stall at Rosehill in August of 2013.
He had just the one run last autumn before spending over 10 months on the sidelines.
The now five-year-old returned off that lengthy let-up on December 20 running a first-up fourth at Rosehill, as he had done that February as well, this time over 1500m in a Benchmark 85 won by Vashka.
Twenty-one days later Danas Best showed improvement with the blinkers on in the $170,000 Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) at the Gold Cost earlier this month.
He had a wide barrier 13 of 14 draw and Tommy Berry aboard, Berry riding him to finish only two lengths away fourth behind Group 1 winning mare Tinto.
Now he returns home to Sydney and is one of 11 final acceptors for Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Vili’s Pies Australia Day Cup (2400m).
Berry retains the ride with the duo drawn well mid-field in barrier five and getting in on the 54kg minimum, weights led by the Chris Waller-trained veteran eight-year-old Permit (59kg).
Waller has also accepted for recent Tattersall’s Cup winner at the track Multilateral who is the next heaviest weighted hopeful with 58.5kg, the stablemates drawn beside each other in barriers three and two.
Danas Best should be getting ready for a big run third-up and also has a nice record of two seconds from three runs at the track.
He’s been up to the mile-and-a-half twice for a Rosehill win and a credible ninth only three lengths off Seville in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick in October of 2013.
All going well and Waterhouse will be not only stepping him up to Group 1 company again this campaign, but also extending him out over the two miles.
She named the $1.6 million Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m), also run at Randwick Racecourse, on April 11 as his long term mission this time in.
Futures Sydney Cup betting markets are already open and going off at our preferred online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au.
Leading the all-in Sydney Cup odds at $7 are Darren Weir’s 2014 Lexus Stakes winner Signoff and former Auckland Cup winner over the 3200m Who Shot Thebarman prepared by Waller.
Ladbrokes are yet to officially add Danas Best to the markets but a few nice early efforts in Sydney are sure to get them and the punters paying attention.
